Hello MomApproved.ca Fans,

I would first like to thank you for becoming fans of MomApproved.ca. It shows how important it is to you as parents to make sure your children stay safe on the internet.

I will be posting brief newsletters to my blog on a monthly basis, newsletters will consist of:

  • What’s going on with MomApproved.ca
  • New articles or tid bits of information I feel important to parents
  • New updates and/or linksFirst announcement is I would like to tell you that MomApproved.ca is now up and running fully. The soft launch was a success and I will be making additions, changes and improvements as time progresses.

I’d also like to share some Internet Guidelines I use in my house for my kids, maybe you are already aware of some of these guidelines. If not it’s always good to have a list handy.

  1. Keep computer in an accessible location, for example the Family Room. Do not keep computers in children’s bedroom. You want to be able to see what your child is doing and you want to make sure all your children get a chance to work on the computer. You want to also make sure you know when your child is using the computer and for how long.
  2. Never allow you children to put passwords on the computer and if they do make sure you know what the passwords are.
  3. Be clear in telling your children what sites are appropriate and which sites are not. For example, social networking sites are not appropriate for younger children, you do not want children opening emails from people they do not know.
  4. You should check out all the sites your children want to use before they go on to them. MomApproved.ca is a great site with links only to family friendly sites but there will definitely be other sites your children will want to check out so make sure you try and check them out first.
  5. Do not allow children to give any personal information about themselves or about anybody else. Also make sure your children do not load or download pictures without your permission.
  6. The same goes for downloading anything from the internet, make sure the child has permission from a parent, guardian or teacher.
  7. If children need a username for certain sites tell them to make one up and then use the same username for any site that requires one. Never use your real or nick name.
  8. If your child is using email, social networking sites, etc… teach them to use proper etiquette. Tell them not to use bad, insulting or rude language.
  9. Limit the amount of time they are on the computer.
  10. Be open with all your children that if they do see or receive anything inappropriate to let a parent or guardian know about what they encountered.
  11. Finally, never agree to meet with anybody you’ve met on the internet. Tell your parents, guardian or teacher if somebody is asking to meet with you. You never know who is on the other end of the computer. So Be Safe and say NO.

These are helpful rules according to me, but if you feel you also have some great rules let me know, send me an email.

A final thought, it is important for fans and members to realize that I want their input. If you feel something is missing or existing links are not really good, or anything, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Regards,
Sara Kohli
